American artist Winslow Homer spent many of his summer vacations creating his idyllic watercolors throughout the 19th century. Two Masted Schooner with Dory was painted by Homer in 1894, where he captures the blissful shimmering reflection of the minimalist schooner in the distance on the water with neutral pigments underneath the morning summer sky. Almost abstract in colour and composition Two Masted Schooner with Dory fills the canvas with an enchanting waterscape is by far one of Homer's most beautiful pieces, projecting a soft, watercolor palette with a fluid movement of reflection to create a mesmerizing piece of art.

The Artist

WINSLOW HOMER

WINSLOW HOMER

Winslow Homer 1836 – 1910 is regarded by many as the greatest American painter of the nineteenth century, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters of 19th-century in America. Homer was largely self-taught and began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterised by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolour, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations.

Homer's works focussed on the beauty, force, and drama of the sea itself. In their dynamic compositions and rich watercolour palettes, his late seascapes capture the look and feel (and even suggest the sound) of masses of onrushing and receding water.
