The acclaimed American female impersonated Vander Broadway whose stage name was Barbette was at the epitome of his solo aerialist career during the Jazz Age and attained great popularity throughout the United States and Europe during the 1920s and 1930s. This idyllic Barbette reproduction from Charles Gesmar who was one of the greatest designers and poster artists of his time has eternalized Barbette in this advertising poster from 1926. Barbette performed trapeze and wire stunts in full drag, maintaining the illusion of femininity until the end of his act, when he would pull off his wig and strike exaggerated masculine poses. Performing at the much loved venues of The Casino de Paris, The Moulin Rouge, The Empire, The Medrano Circus and The Folies Bergere. This Barbette art print oozes 1920's chic, a feathery, feminine mélange of striking imagery by Gesmar, the pastel colour palette against the vintage black background completes this stunning art print that features one of the greatest performers of the Parisian Golden Age.

The Artist
CHARLES GESMAR

Charles Gesmar (1900 - 1928) was born in Nancy, France and was one of the greatest designers of music hall posters during the golden age of the Paris Jazz Age scene. Gesmar was renowned for his posters created for the celebrated Parisian star Mistinguett. Gesmar was a talented artist prior to starting his official training in applied arts and at the age of 16 years old he began designing posters for Mistinguett. Having worked as a poster designer, in 1925 Gesmar was asked to work for the Moulin Rouge and in just under a decade he created more than 12,000 costume drawings, thirty program covers and 55 advertising posters.
